Description

Tudor House is a house dating from the 16th century, with later additions in the late 17th century. It is located on Church Street, Gamliday. The house is timber-framed and has been plastered with a plain tiled roof. It incorporates red brickwork with moulded brick capping and three diagonally set shafts, two of which are linked. A projecting stack on the west wall is also of red brick and has an embattled offset. Originally a house of L-plan, it was extended by a domestic wing in the late 17th or 18th century.

The main range consists of one bay and two storeys, featuring three-light casement windows from the 18th or 19th century on each level. The west crosswing is jettied at first floor and has been underbuilt with a repaired canted bay at ground floor, added around 1985. A similar three-light casement window is located at the first floor level. The rear wing, dating from the late 17th or 18th century, has a red brick casing to the timber frame, now rendered and tiled. It has two storeys, and the ground floor originally contained three arched openings, which are now blocked. A 17th-century ovolo moulded mullion remains, associated with an original casement opening, on the rear wall of the crosswing. A stair turret is situated in the angle between the front and rear ranges and has been altered, incorporating reused timber.

Internally, the main range and crosswing are contemporary. The main range, originally open to the roof, has a 17th-century ceiling with ovolo moulding on the main beam and joists laid on edge. The crosswing, likely a solar wing, has an earlier ceiling of heavier joists laid flat, and wall posts with jowled heads.
