Description

This is a late 18th and early 19th century cottage on Church Street in Gamlimgay. The original timber frame is now largely hidden by a brick exterior, which has been colourwashed. The roof is tiled, featuring a mansard shape with a dentil eaves cornice, and a ridge stack that has been cut down. The cottage is one storey with an attic, and has three dormers. The three windows on the front are set within segmental arches, although the windows themselves are from the late 20th century. There are two doorways. A bay at the west end was formerly a baker's shop. Behind the main building is an early 19th century bakehouse, constructed of brick with a tiled roof and hoist openings on the first floor. The interior shows extensive timber framing replaced by brick in the 19th and 20th centuries, alongside later extensions. The section at the east end contains a cellar. A brick with the date 1815 is likely to mark the construction date of the bakehouse. The initials "GS" may relate to the baker, Sarll, whose family continued baking at this location until 1922.
