Description

No. 1 Thurlborns Close is a house from the early 17th century that incorporates an earlier building, possibly an open-hall. Later additions were made to the south side wall. The house is timber-framed, rendered, and features a steeply pitched tiled roof with an early 17th-century ridge stack that has grouped shafts set diagonally. The layout consists of a single range including a parlour, hall, and service bay. It has two storeys and a jettied gable end. The windows are all later additions, including two windows and a small closet opening on the side facing Thurlborns Close. The current doorway leads to the former service bay, with an additional doorway for a lobby entry on the south side and another entry at the jettied gable end.

Inside, some of the framing from the original earlier house is visible, including main posts and tie beams at the right-hand gable end, as well as original wall plates, although there is insufficient framing visible to date the earlier building. In the early 17th century, the jettied bay was constructed, the roof of the hall and service bay was raised, the stack was likely inserted, and the hall was floored. The present roof, built at that time, consists of five bays, including a narrower chimney bay, and is of staggered, butt-purlin construction with collars between the principal rafters. Notably, the joists of the floor frame in the parlour extend into the lobby entry, indicating that there was originally an internal jetty.
