Description
Bedford Belmont House is a building that was formerly two dwellings. It dates back to the 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the early 19th century. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, featuring a pantile roof and a red brick ridge stack located to the right of the center, along with a rear stack on the left side. The original building likely had a three-unit plan and was raised to two storeys, being converted into two separate dwellings in the early 19th century. This conversion included a remnant clunch wall, which may be part of a 16th-century stair in the cellar.
The front elevation showcases two early 19th-century panelled doors with rectangular fanlights above them. There are four flush-framed twelve-paned hung sash windows on the ground floor and four similar windows on the first floor, which replaced earlier windows of a similar style. Inside, the building features exposed timber-frame and floor frames, a red brick hearth, and a wall painting from the early 17th century depicting a floral design in the room to the west.
