Description
Marshall's Cottage, also known as Yorke Cottage, is a house that was formerly a rectory and is now divided into two dwellings. It dates back to 1597, with alterations in the 18th century and a remodel in 1833. The building features mainly gault brick cladding over a possible timber frame, with some 18th-century red brick on the rear wall of the west crosswing. It has tiled roofs and projecting side stacks on the crosswings.
The structure is a double-ended hall house with two storeys. The door and window openings may be in their original locations, but they were updated around 1833. The windows are hung sashes with raised surrounds and labels that have return stops. Each crosswing's ground floor includes a canted bay with double hung sashes, and above each bay is a six-pane hung sash. The west crosswing displays a 19th-century panel with the initials EM 1597, while the east crosswing features HRY 1833.
The west crosswing was extended at the rear in the 18th century, constructed of red brick with a hipped tiled roof. It has two storeys, with segmental arches and raised surrounds for twelve-pane hung sashes that include ovolo moulded glazing bars. Inside, the roof likely still contains rafters from the 16th-century house. The building is included for its group value.
