Description
No. 56 High Street is a house dating from 1664. It has a timber frame that is stuccoed and incised to resemble stone, with the left-hand gable end rendered in brick. The roof is covered with corrugated iron and has steeply pitched rafters, featuring a central red brick chimney stack. There is a recessed date panel at the base of the stack that displays the year 1664, which has been recut in the render. The main range of the house follows a lobby entry plan with a crosswing on the right side. It is two storeys high, with two windows on the first floor and two more on either side of the lobby entry door. The windows were replaced in the 20th century, but the door is from the late 18th century and has six raised and fielded panels. The crosswing contains one window on each side and features 18th-century raised and fielded panelling in a cupboard. There is an early 19th-century staircase located at the rear of the central room. The house has inglenook hearths, one of which is sealed.
