Description

This is a timber-framed cottage, likely dating from the late medieval period with a significant rebuild in 1676. It has been divided into two separate dwellings. The exterior is roughcast rendered and features a long straw thatch roof. A red brick ridge stack is present, inscribed with the initials "CID" and the date 1676 at its base, with upper courses of gault brick added in the 19th century. The cottage is a single range with one storey and an attic, and includes two eyebrow dormers. Modern small wood casements are fitted to the ground floor, along with two doorways added during the building's subdivision. It was originally likely a baffle entry type cottage.

Inside, the layout includes back-to-back hearths. Number 16 contains a kitchen with a red brick inglenook and a bread oven. The bressumer above the inglenook is from the 16th century and has been moulded and reused. The truss over the hall, positioned next to the 1676 inglenook, probably dates back to the late medieval period. Further features include solid braces connecting the main posts to the tie beam—partly obscured—and wind bracing to the roof. The joists in this room rest upon splayed clamps. A staircase off the parlour at the south end is likely original.
