Description
Chestnut House is a cottage dating from the late 17th century. It features a timber frame, roughcast render, and a reed thatched roof with a ridge stack made of two builds. The building has a three-bay baffle entry plan oriented with its end facing the road, and it is one storey high with an attic. The south front includes one dormer and two small 19th-century casement windows, likely in their original openings, flanking a boarded door. On the north side, there is a bread oven with the thatch extending down over it.
Inside, the parlour at the west end, which faces the road, has a 19th-century hearth that may have been added when the cottage was divided. An original newel staircase leads from the parlour. The kitchen contains an inglenook hearth, while the openings for the bread oven have been blocked. The narrower service bay retains its original partition between the pantry and scullery. A later staircase has been added. The framing of the cottage features both upward and downward wall bracing, along with stop-chamfered main beams.
