Description
Furtherwick House is a house that dates from the late 17th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of local red brick, featuring a front wall that has been rendered in the 20th century, and it has a steeply pitched roof with high end parapets on kneelers at the crosswings. The chimney stacks at the rear wall of the crosswings were partially rebuilt in the 19th century, with one stack having an offset and an embattled upper edge. The house has a half H-plan and consists of two storeys. The hall range includes two 20th-century metal windows, one on each storey, and an off-centre doorway that likely leads to a cross-passage. Each gable end of the crosswings features five 20th-century metal casements, which probably replace the original openings.
Inside, a staircase has been inserted into the original cross-passage, but the original opposing doorways remain, although the doors are of a later date. The service and kitchen crosswing to the right has an inglenook hearth. The chamber above the hall has stop-chamfered main beams, and both the hall, the chamber over the hall, and the ground floor room in the parlour crosswing all have corner fireplaces. The roof structure is of staggered butt-purlin construction. The house may have connections to Dutch prisoners of war who were involved in the construction of the New Bedford River and stayed in the area after peace was established in 1654.
