Description
No. 17 High Street is a house dating from 1700, constructed of narrow red brick in Flemish bond. It features a steeply pitched roof now covered with interlocking tiles and has tumbled gable end parapets supported by moulded brick kneelers. The original flush end stacks have rectangular bases and are topped with two grouped shafts set diagonally. Originally designed as a T-plan house, the rear range has since been demolished. The building stands two storeys tall with an attic and includes one dormer.
At the gable end, there is a plain three-brick band at the eaves height and between the storeys. The ground floor has original narrow gauged brick arches above two 19th-century recessed hung sash windows on either side of the doorway. The original doorcase features flanking red brick pilasters with plain capitals and bases that support a wooden pediment adorned with modillions and dentils. The tympanum is decorated with a plaster thistle design. Each gable end displays a lozenge pattern made from burnt brick headers. A brick on the left side of the ground floor is inscribed with the year 1700 and the initials A.C.
The interior has not been seen but is reported to have undergone significant alterations in the 1960s when the staircase was removed. The service wing was timber framed. It has been suggested that the thistle design may be linked to Scottish prisoners of war from the Battle of Dunbar in 1650, some of whom were involved in the drainage of the fens and later settled in Over.
