Description

The obelisk at Maggots Mound is a memorial dedicated to Gregory Wale, dating from around 1739. It was created by the sculptor Charles Bottomley, who signed the work. The obelisk is made of limestone and is elevated on a cement-rendered truncated pyramid base. At the top, it features a badly worn urn or vase with twisted fluting. This structure is noted in Pevsner's "Buildings of England" and R. Gunnis's "Dictionary of British Sculptors."
