Description

The Old House is a house dating from around 1500, with alterations made around 1600 and an extension added around 1950. It features a timber frame that is exposed, with rendered infill, and has a steeply pitched roof covered in plain tiles. The ridge stack is made of red brick, with shafts set on a square base and a moulded upper course. Originally, the building had a parlour crosswing to a hall, which has since been demolished. The house is two storeys tall, with a gable end facing the road that jetties at the first floor. The jetty brackets rise from narrow pilasters with capitals that are now damaged. The exterior displays close studding and cranked downward bracing, while the gable end has modern windows, which may be partly original or from the site. Access is through a porch added in 1950 on the side of the house.

Inside, the layout consists of two bays, likely serving as an unheated parlour wing to a hall house. The first floor was open to the roof. A chimney stack was inserted around 1600 into part of the second bay. The ceiling of the ground floor room is original, featuring double cyma moulding on two main beams, with flat, unmoulded joists. The inglenook hearth is made of red brick, plastered over the bressumer, and bears an inscription from around 1600 in black Gothic lettering. The wall plate is stop-chamfered, as is an intermediate post associated with the second main beam that supports the ceiling of the ground floor room. The tie beams are arch-braced, and the roof is constructed with clasped side purlins and cranked wind bracing.
