Description
Orchard Cottage is a Grade II listed cottage dated 1662, located on Meldreth Station Road. It features a small pantry extension from around 1800 at the north end. The cottage is timber framed, plaster rendered, and has a long straw thatched roof with a half-hipped design. The ridge stack is made of red brick and was originally timber framed and plastered, but has since been replaced.
This cottage is a notable example of a three-bay and lobby entry plan, consisting of one storey and an attic. It has two dormers with 19th-century casements and two casement windows on either side of the doorway, which leads to the single-bay pantry addition. Inside, Orchard Cottage retains many original features, including internal partition walls at the service end and a staircase beside the stack. The framing resembles that of other late 17th-century cottages, with straight downward bracing and a side purlin in the roof. The floors are made of elm boarding.
In the 19th century, there was a blacksmith's forge adjacent to the cottage. The lintel over the original hearth was dated 1662 but was deposited in a local museum after a fire in 1959.
