Description

The stable block, located about 250 yards southeast of Wimpole Hall, was designed around 1841 by H E Kendall and constructed in 1852. It features red brick with stone dressings and has low pitch hipped roofs of slate that are obscured by a blocked parapet. The building consists of four ranges surrounding a courtyard, with the principal range situated on the west side. It is two storeys tall.

The west front is divided into nine unequal bays, with the center and end bays being wider. The center bay and the two adjacent bays project outward. These bays are separated by rusticated pilasters, which are paired at the end bays and feature stone rustication in the center bays. The entablature of the pilasters forms the roof parapet, which is topped with ball finials and the heraldic emblems of the Yorke family, flanking a clock turret. The parapet extends over the end bays of each side in a segmental pediment.

The coach doorway is panelled, as are the two flanking pedestrian doorways. The round-headed coach entry is flanked by rusticated pilasters that support a Doric entablature with a pediment, topped by an elaborate clock turret and cupola with a bell-shaped copper roof. The clock turret features paired Corinthian pilasters at the corners, and the cupola is decorated with console brackets. Inside the turret, there is a barrel vault, and the courtyard is paved with granite setts. A cast iron lean-to shelter is also present.

Originally, the north front adjoined the garden and outbuildings of the old Rectory, which are now known as Yorke and Marshall's Cottages. The design of the stable block is reminiscent of the English Baroque style, particularly that of the Office of Works School and Thomas Archer.
