Description
This listing describes a row of three tombstones and one chest tomb located approximately 9 meters east of the chancel of St Nicholas Parish Church. These tombs date from the 18th century and are made of limestone.
From south to north, the tombs are identified as follows: the first tombstone has a shaped head featuring a carved angel head, embellished with drapes and fruit, and includes an oval plaque inscribed to William Row, who died in 1767. The second is a chest tomb with a moulded plinth and coping, shaped angle pilasters, and panels inscribed to Endersby Yeardly, who died in 1760, along with his sons and daughter. The third tombstone has a segmental head and a classical design with columns flanking a plaque inscribed to James Taylor, who died in 1744. The fourth tombstone is flat-headed with a shaped plaque that is finely inscribed to Mathew Stubbs, who died in 1770, and his wife Grace, who died in 1773.
These tombstones and the chest tomb are notable examples of 18th-century memorials found to the south and east of the Parish Church.
