Description

Townsend Farmhouse is a late 18th-century farmhouse located on the High Street in Upwood and The Raveleys. Constructed of yellow gault brick in English bond, it has a tiled roof with tumbled parapet gables on kneelers, and flush end stacks. A contemporary kitchen and dairy wing at the rear creates an L-shaped plan. The house includes a cellar and consists of two storeys and an attic.

The symmetrical front facade features five flush frame twelve-pane hung sashes under flat arches, dating to the mid-19th century. The central doorway has a shouldered architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a moulded cornice supporting a narrow hood. The door itself is of six raised and fielded panels, topped with a three-light rectangular fanlight. A brick kitchen wing of matching brickwork extends to the rear, with a hipped tiled roof and a projecting side stack with offsets. A later 20th-century addition is situated in the re-entrant angle.

Inside, there are opposing front and rear doorways, both dating to the late 18th century. The original staircase retains a moulded rail and square, fluted newels but has mid-19th century stick balusters. Two late 18th-century shouldered fireplace surrounds, one with a pulvinated frieze, are located on the first floor. The ground floor has one grey and one white marble fireplace, dating to the mid-19th century. Dormers have been removed from the roof.
