Description

Three Horseshoes Cottage, formerly known as Three Horseshoes Inn, is a cottage that dates from the late 17th century and 19th century. It features a timber-frame structure that is cased in 19th-century brick and painted. The roof is reed thatched and hipped, with an original red brick ridge stack that has two linked diagonally set shafts on a rectangular base. A 19th-century gault brick stack was added at the same time as a bay on the southeast end.

The original layout is likely a three-bay plan, possibly of lobby entry type, but it has been altered due to later additions. A bay was added to the southeast end, which serves as a tap-room, along with a kitchen wing at the rear. The cottage is one storey with an attic. The front features a dormer with a small pane horizontal sliding sash and three ground floor windows, which have 19th-century openings and two small pane horizontal sliding sashes in segmented arches. There are also two doorways in segmental arches, and a 19th-century brick extension for the tap-room.

The rear kitchen wing is also of brick and dates from the 19th century, with a pantiled and slate roof. The interior retains some exposed timber-framing in two wall trusses, showcasing jowled post heads and a side purlin roof, with wattle and daub infill. There is an inglenook hearth with an inserted bread oven and a smaller hearth that may have been used for a former parlour.
