Description
The Old Rectory is a Grade II listed building located on Broughton School Road. This former rectory dates back to the early 17th century and features a timber-framed cross-wing alongside a later brick range, which was possibly designed similarly to the Bird farmhouse, built in 1676. The kitchen range to the west has been recently demolished.
The building is two storeys high, with a jettied cross-wing on the east side that is rough-cast and colour-washed, topped with a hipped plain tile roof. It has oriel windows on both floors, showcasing original ovolo mullions and transoms. There are two drop finials at the eaves and a moulded cornice on the right side. The main range is also two storeys, constructed of colour-washed soft red brick, featuring a central stack and gable end stacks on the right, with a parapet gable. The roof is covered with plain tiles.
The building includes two flat-roofed dormer windows with hung sashes and glazing bars, as well as four similar hung sash windows on the first floor. On the ground floor, there are three windows with glazing bars and an eight-panelled door to the left with panelled reveals. Inside, there is a late 19th-century Gothic chimney piece dedicated to a rector named Mr. Johnston, and a Jacobean Revival staircase that rises from the hall.
