Description
Chestnut Farmhouse and former shop is a farmhouse and shop located on the north side of Elton Stocks Green. It is dated '1740 RJM' on an oval plaque below the eaves and features a butcher's shop from around 1880 that replaced the original service range. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with freestone and ashlar dressings, 19th century rock-faced limestone, and has roofs of Collyweston stone slates and plain tiles.
The structure is two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical facade of three bays. It features parapet gables with chamfered copings and ashlar end stacks, along with a wooden, moulded eaves cornice. The entrance consists of a four-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight above. There are two ground floor casement windows with wooden lintels and three similar windows on the first floor. A fire insurance plaque is located above the first floor window, and there is a quoin stone inscribed 'John Read 1771'.
To the east is a single-storey shop with two paired two-light windows and two paired sixteen-paned hung sash windows, topped with a gabled roof that has mock timber-frame and tracery. The shop entrance and two windows create three equal bays in a wide two-centred east gable archway, with both windows featuring drop shutters. Inside the farmhouse, there are boxed ceiling beams, sealed hearths, an 18th century cornice in the western room, 18th century panelling on the central stairs, and two-panelled doors.
