Description
Byfield Cottage is a house that dates back to the early 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century. Part of the original structure was demolished to accommodate a 19th-century addition. The building is constructed of timber framing with plaster and brick, and it features painted brick casing. It has thatched roofs. The original cottage was a single storey with an attic and has a three-unit plan, including an open hall and a single-storey rear wing that was formerly a dairy, located to the north of the 19th-century two-storey range.
The front of the cottage has a 19th-century door with four flush panels on the left side, three ground floor three-light casement windows, and one window that replaced a former doorway on the right side. There are also two eyebrow dormer windows and two first-floor casement windows. The 19th-century range features a corbelled parapet gable and a sawtooth brick eaves cornice.
Inside, there is a 17th-century inserted floor frame with a stop-chamfered ceiling beam, and the original 16th-century roof includes a ridge piece and smoke-blackened rafters. The flooring features 19th-century tiles.
