Description
Chequers Inn is a 17th century building that has been altered in the 18th century and later. It has a T-shaped plan, likely originally built as two cottages, with a later addition at the rear. The building is two storeys high, featuring a modern entrance extension on the north side and a one-storey range at the east end. The street-facing block was originally double fronted with two windows, and a former doorway has been converted into a window. The rear range was also formerly double fronted with three windows, but an old entrance has been blocked. The roof is tiled, with the front block having a gable-ridge stack made of red brick, while the rear range has a large, altered stack centrally located on the south side. The structure is timber framed, with a brick ground floor and a rough-cast finish. The first floor of the rear range retains original three and two-light casement windows with leaded lights and flush frames, along with modern windows designed to match. The interior has been altered but still features some stop-chamfered beams with carved stops. Chequers Inn, along with Nos 1 and 3, forms a group.
