Description

This is a row of five headstones located in the churchyard of the former Parish Church of St Andrew, which has since been demolished. The headstones date from the 18th century and are made of limestone.

The first headstone features a segmental broken pediment with a pair of winged cherubs' heads above an oval tablet that has an inscription carved in Gothick, Roman, and Italic lettering in low relief. The border includes acanthus, rose, acorn, and other emblems. The second headstone is similar to the first.

The third headstone has a segmental head with paired winged cherubs' heads above an effigy of the deceased, and below it is a square tablet with an inscription in Gothick and Roman lettering, dated 17(3?)6. This tablet is flanked by naive Atlantes holding flaming torches on pedestals, which are carved with symbols of mortality.

The fourth headstone, dated 1728, has an open segmental head with an urn above a square tablet carved in low relief, flanked by a border of acanthus and rose carvings, and below it features the Resurrection with Atlantes on either side.

The fifth headstone has a shaped head with a pair of winged cherubs above a carved tablet that is enriched with foliate bosses, and a raised tablet with an inscription in Gothick and Roman lettering in low relief.
