Description
This is a cottage located in Mells, dating from the late 17th century, with a late 18th-century outshut at the rear. It features a timber-framed structure that is plaster rendered, topped with a pantiled roof that was formerly thatched and has a half hipped design. There is a rendered brick ridge stack. The cottage has a three-bay plan, which includes a narrower pantry bay at the northeast end. The late 18th-century lean-to outshut at the back was added following a subdivision. The building has one storey and an attic, with two cat slide dormers, one of which was inserted in the 20th century. There are two modern ground floor bay windows on either side of the lobby entry doorway. Inside, the structure shows upward bracing to the wall frame and tie beams, with close set studwork of substantial scantling. It also features back-to-back inglenooks and a small closet opening opposite the stack. The posts have jowled heads, and there are continuous studs running from the sole to the wall plate.
