Description
The Mermaid is an inn dating from the early 17th century, featuring a timber-framed and plastered main range that was originally jettied over the street. To the west, there is a later 17th-century extension made of painted brick, which has a tumbled parapet gable and an end stack. The rear wing, also timber framed and plastered, may date back to the medieval period and is similar to Brookside. The building has plain tile roofs, with the main range having a half-hipped roof to the north and an original red brick stack at the junction with the rear wing.
The street facade is two storeys high and includes two first-floor, two-light horizontal sliding sash windows with glazing bars. To the left of the door, there is a similar three-light window. The extension features a large projecting canted bay window made of painted brick and topped with a slate roof, which contains three hung sash windows with glazing bars.
