Description
The tomb of Sir Harry Smith is a chest tomb located east north east of the cemetery chapel in Whittlesey, dating from around 1860. It is made of granite and limestone and features decorative cast-iron railings that surround the plot. The granite tomb has inscriptions dedicated to Lieutenant-General Sir Harry Smith, who died in 1860, and his wife Juana, who died in 1872. The base of the tomb lists the many battles in which Sir Harry fought. One side of the tomb displays a large bronze plaque bearing the words spoken by the Duke of Wellington in the House of Lords, likely during the time Parliament expressed its gratitude to Sir Harry for his victory at Aliwal in 1846. Sir Harry became Governor of Cape Colony in 1847, and the towns of Harrismith and Ladysmith are named in honor of him and his wife.
