Description

The Congregational Chapel, built in 1818, is located on the north side of Wisbech Castle Square. It is constructed from local brown brick, featuring rusticated stone quoins, a stone cill band, and a plinth band. The building is two storeys tall with a symmetrical facade. On the first floor, there are three double recessed round-headed brick arches, each with a stone key block and imposts. The hung sash windows, which resemble those of the Wesleyan chapel on The Crescent, may be replacements and are shaped to fit round-headed arches with margin glazing bars.

Flanking the central doorway, which has rusticated stone jambs and a deep flat stone arch with a cornice and fanned key block, are two similar windows. The doorway is topped by a large rectangular fanlight with margin glazing bars and is approached by stone steps leading to modern double doors.

To the west of the chapel, there is a two-storey Sunday School built in 1911, which features matching architectural details and rusticated jambs on its archway. Inside the chapel, the original gallery extends along three sides and is supported by slender iron columns with a panelled balustrade. Fluted and sunk-panelled pilasters frame the dais arch, which houses the organ in a recess. The chapel also contains three two-light ground floor windows with arched glazing bars, featuring early 20th-century stained glass.
