Description
38 and 39 Market Place are early 18th century shops, with a facade that may have been altered in the early 19th century and further modified in the early 20th century. The buildings feature steeply pitched slate roofs with a double gable facing the street and a large brick stack on the left side. The structure is made of rendered brick and consists of two storeys with attics. At the rear, a wing extends over the Mews, showcasing exposed hollow-chamfered floor beams and two brick arches, one of which spans the passage to Hill Street. The gables on the facade have shaped bargeboards with wooden finials. In the attic, there are two four-paned hung sash windows set in segmental arches. The first floor includes two casement windows that originally opened onto a balcony and three twelve-paned hung sash windows, with two recessed and one flush framed. The ground floor has been adapted for two modern shops. These buildings are included for their group value.
