Description
This is an early 19th century coaching inn in Wisbech. Built of local brown brick, it has a red tile roof with shallow parapet gables and tall end stacks. The inn is three storeys high with a basement, and has a side passage to the east. A dormer window with a flat roof is present. The second floor has three recessed casement windows, with stone sills set within cambered, gauged red brick arches. The first floor has three, and the ground floor has two, four-paned hung sash windows, also within similar arches. A plain wooden doorcase is topped by a rectangular fanlight. The building is documented in Watson’s History of Wisbech, 1827, and A.A. Oldham’s The Inns and Taverns of Wisbech, 1950. Historical photographs and prints, dating to the 18th and 19th centuries, are held at the Wisbech & F. Mus.
