Description
8 and 9 North Brink are a pair of houses built in the late 18th century, with early 19th century and late 20th century alterations. They are currently used as a doctors’ surgery.
The buildings are made of brown brick with brick dressings and have a slate-clad roof. They are situated in a terrace along the north shore of the River Nene and have a rectangular plan, with a rear lean-to extension at No. 8.
The symmetrical two-bay houses rise four storeys above a basement and feature a plain parapet. The inner bays are highlighted by rebuilt bow windows that extend through three storeys, complete with moulded cornices and 20th century twelve-over-twelve pane sash windows with gauged red brick arches. Above these bow windows are three-over-three pane sashes. The entrances are identical, each with recessed four-panelled doors, round-headed fanlights with radial glazing bars, and doorcases that have fluted pilasters, reveals, and corner blocks. The windows on each floor above the entrances are blank, with the first and second floors appearing as six-over-six pane sashes, while the top floor has three-over-three pane sashes. The rear elevation features 20th century three-over-three pane sash windows with flat brick arches, and there is a 20th century door to No. 9.
The interior has been extensively remodelled and retains little of its original layout. The only original features remaining are the kitchen range in the basement of No. 9 and the principal open well stair located at the end of the long narrow entrance corridor. This stair has an open string with carved tread ends, two stick balusters per tread, slender round newel posts, and a mahogany handrail that terminates in a curtail.
