Description
Horsegate House is a house dating from the early 18th century, with a 19th-century kitchen wing at the rear. It is constructed of narrow painted gault brick in English bond on a stone rubble base, with some stone incorporated into the rear walls. The building features a steeply pitched roof, currently covered with cement tiles and partly rebuilt, with symmetrical flush end stacks and tumbled end parapets on kneelers. An original wooden modillion eaves cornice adds to its character. The layout consists of front and rear ranges forming a T-plan, with two storeys and attics. There are two 19th-century gable dormers, and the two storeys are framed by pilasters, with the heads of the pilasters forming the kneelers of the end parapet. The façade is divided by a plain three-brick band, and the window openings were likely enlarged in the early 19th century. There are two tripartite hung sashes on either side of a twelve-pane hung sash. Access is via two steps leading up to a central doorway, which is adorned with an early 19th-century Doric portico made of painted stone. Inside, there is an early 19th-century open-string staircase.
