Description
Ely Maltings is a notable example of a mid-19th century maltings building, originally constructed in 1868, as indicated by a plaque on the gable at the east end that features the initials EWH. The structure is made of local brick, accented with red and white brick dressings, and showcases a decorative band of ornamental brickwork in a fret pattern between the first and second storeys. At the west end, there is a large pyramid-shaped east house. The building has three storeys and attics, with a total of 13 windows, including a five-window range on the east end that was designed in the original style during the 20th century. The ground storey features a wide stone segmental arched doorway at the east end of the north side. The roof is slate, gabled at the east end, and includes shaped bargeboards and six gabled dormers, also with shaped bargeboards. The malthouse was restored in 1971 and repurposed as a public hall. Ely Maltings, along with Nos 54 to 64 (even), and No 68 (Malting Cottage), forms a group with Nos 51 to 53 (consecutive), the Malthouse adjoining No 53, Quay House, and No 55, as well as the house adjoining No 55 on Waterside.
