Description
This barn, located 50 yards north of Manor Farmhouse, dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof that was rebuilt in 1899, now featuring two pitches and covered in corrugated iron. The barn has approximately nine bays and two cartway openings on the north side.
Inside, only a few of the trusses are visible. One of the late medieval trusses shows paired bracing to the tie beams and single bracing from the arcade post to the arcade plate. There is also bracing from the wall posts to the arcade posts, which are halved over the aisle ties. The early date of this section of the barn is indicated by the paired bracing in the tie beams and the continuous bracing from the wall post to the arcade post. However, not enough of the truss or the rest of the barn was visible to determine the extent of the 16th-century part or if it was a rebuild of an earlier barn in an archaic style. The trusses at the west end of the barn are later and lack the paired tie beam bracing or arcade post bracing.
In 1744, William Cole noted that the farm had "one of the largest barns I ever saw, except the Bishop's barn at Ely," when the manor was rented to Dr. Conyers Middleton, a Woodwardian Professor of Theology at Cambridge University.
