Description

Nos. 34 and 36 Pratt Street is a house dating from the mid-16th century that was completely remodeled around 1800 when it was converted into a pair of villas. The building has a timber frame that is entirely encased in gault brick, featuring a steeply pitched parapetted roof covered with slates. There is a shaped ridge stack located where the original stack was. The house has two storeys and includes finely gauged grey brick arches above four recessed hung sash windows, each with twelve panes, on either side of a blind window opening opposite the stack. At the ground floor, four similar windows flank two doorways that have identical surrounds and flat hoods from around 1800. The doors date from around 1950.

Inside, the timber framing remains intact, with some fanning visible in the front and rear walls. The original ceiling in No. 34 has been exposed and features particularly fine intersecting main beams carved with foliate ornament. The inglenook hearth is made of narrow red brick, which has been cased. No. 36 has a well-preserved interior from around 1800, including raised and fielded panelling on the doors and below the dado. It also features intersecting main beams that are now boxed, and a semi-domed hood over a niche with a round-headed arch and shaped shelving. The roof structure consists of clasped, through purlin construction with collars between the principal rafters, and part of the original main beam is visible in a cupboard, showcasing wide stop-chamfers.
