Description

Tudor House is a house built probably in the late 16th century, with the service end on the left side rebuilt in the late 17th century. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, topped with a later half-hipped tiled roof. The roof includes a ridge stack built in the 19th century, designed in the style of the early 17th century, with grouped shafts on a rectangular base. The house has a lobby entry plan consisting of three bays and a narrow fire and stair bay. It stands two storeys high, with the side wall jettied at the first floor.

On the first floor, there are five 19th-century Tudoresque casement windows, each with a drip mould and return stops, which may be original or could date from the time when the roof of the service wing was raised. The entry is located in a small hall opposite the stack, built in the 19th century from clunch on a brick sill, featuring curved walls. The late 17th-century service wing is also timber-framed and rendered but has had its roof raised, with a ridge stack and two similar windows with arched panes at the first floor.

Inside, there is no evidence of a closed truss between the earlier and later ranges, suggesting that the late 17th-century range is a rebuild of part of the original house. The floor frames of the hall and parlour contain quartered main beams that are stop-chamfered. One tie-beam has two peg holes at the centre, indicating that the roof may have originally been of crown post construction, though further evidence was not observed.
