Description
The Fox is an inn that dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century. Originally built with a three-unit plan, it was rebuilt in the 18th century and again in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of clunch with a modern tiled roof and features a local brick ridge stack on the right side. The painted 19th-century brickwork has a hipped slate roof. The early structure is one storey with an attic and includes two gabled dormer windows with twelve panes each. There are two half-glazed doors on either side, along with three windows of varying sizes that have glazing bars; two of these windows have late 18th-century panelled shutters. The building also has a two-storey cross-wing with two side stacks. On the first floor, there is a recessed twelve-paned hung sash window, and at ground level, there is a canted bay with hung sash windows and a flat roof. Inside, the original double ovolo-moulded axial beams can be found. The Fox was first recorded as an ale house in 1764.
