Description
Central Buildings at Churchill College is a two-storey structure built between 1961 and 1968 by Sheppard Robson and Partners. It serves various functions, including a dining room, kitchens, common rooms, a boiler house, college offices, and the main entrance. The building features an irregular 'H' plan, with the dining hall linking two parallel ranges. The dining hall is situated on the upper floor and rises above the other sections, topped by three segmental barrel vaults. The exterior is made of brown brick and concrete, which includes both pre-cast and board-marked elements. There is a pre-cast concrete sunscreen with pre-cast mullions beneath the vaults. Inside, dark timber panelling is present, and the lower sections have horizontal strip windows with timber frames that include thick timber horizontals. The entrance is marked by a pair of giant brick piers, with a recessed area between them featuring a pivoting entrance gate made of aluminium, designed by sculptor Geoffrey Clarke. This building is an integral part of the planned layout of Churchill College.
