Description
Nos. 1-32 and 35-48 New Square are early 19th-century buildings that stand two storeys tall. They are constructed of gault brick with slate roofs featuring projecting eaves supported by small brackets. The windows have flat brick arches, most of which include glazing bars, and some still have their original shutters. The ground floor alternates between round-headed doorways with plain stone imposts. The middle two tenements on each side are flanked and divided by brick pilasters that support a simple pediment. The square was developed over several years, with the South Terrace built around 1825, the East Terrace in 1834, and the North Terrace between 1834 and 1835. Each terrace has slight variations in its design. Inside, the fittings are good but plain, featuring original staircases and fireplaces.
