Description
4 and 6 Maid's Causeway appear as a single house but were always designed as a pair. They are connected to number 8 by a low brick wall. Dating from the early 19th century, they were originally numbers 18 and 20 and later heightened. The building is constructed of gault brick with a slate roof, and exhibits a symmetrical design to the front elevation. Features include a stone band at the sill level of the first-floor windows and between the first and second floors, three windows with flat brick arches and glazing bars, and a central round-headed doorway. The properties form part of Charles Humfrey’s Doll's Close development, built between 1815 and 1826. Numbers 4 to 20 (even) form a group with number 1 Fair Street and number 1 Short Street.
