Description

The Church Army Hostel, located at 1-5 Fair Street, was built around 1820 by Charles Humphrey as part of the Doll’s Close development, which is associated with Maid’s Causeway. The building is constructed of grey gault brick and comprises a uniform frontage of five houses, each with two bays, followed by a wide segmental-headed carriage arch and the hostel itself, which spans five bays. The building is two storeys high with a basement. Windows are sash windows with glazing bars. Each house has a timber doorcase with side pilasters and a plain entablature. The roof is slate-covered. The north gable end of No 1 forms the original east end-feature of Maid's Causeway. A broad wall arch with an elliptical head and pediment features over a window on each floor, with the basement and first-floor windows partially concealed within the arch. The return wall of the hostel in Willow Walk is of three bays and includes two pilaster strips. A carved nameplate bears the street name.
