Description

Number 10 is a house, now divided into flats, with an attached garage and studio wing. It was built in 1904 for Alexander Macintosh, a local speculative builder. The building is constructed of red brick and features a plain tile roof with tall brick stacks. It has two storeys plus an attic, and all the windows are framed with flush ashlar surrounds and have leaded casements.

The southeast entrance front includes an off-centre round-headed archway leading to a recessed door. To the left, there is a canted two-storey bay window, which has a three-light cross casement on the ground floor and a three-light mullion window above, topped with a parapet. Above the door, there is a very plain single-light Venetian window. Two three-light flat-headed dormer windows are situated above. The projecting gabled wing to the right features a cross casement window and, above it, two two-light mullion windows on either side. The gable front has a four-light mullion window, a four-light cross casement above, and a small single-light window in the apex of the gable. A set-back range to the right has similar window designs.

The southwest garden front has a single-storey projecting bay to the left and a columned loggia to the right, which has a hipped roof. The bay contains a four-light mullion window and a similar two-light window on the left side. The loggia is supported by four Doric stone columns and features a large round-arched doorway, with another four-light mullion window to the right. Above the doorway, there is a central rectangular ashlar sundial inscribed with "AM, 1904, FORGOTTEN BE HOURS NOT CHRONICLED BY ME." On either side are single cross casement windows, with a four-light mullion window above.

The northwest front has a projecting square bay window with a single-light cross casement below a catslide roof. This side also features a six-light flat-headed casement window at the first floor and a similar two-light window above.

Inside, the property retains many high-quality original features, including a well-crafted staircase with turned balusters, wreathed plaster ceilings, original fireplaces with beaten copper hoods, and most windows still have fine Art Nouveau style stained glass. This impressive Edwardian house showcases design influences from its time.
