Description
No 31 on Trumpington Street, formerly known as Fitzwilliam House, is a building dated 1727. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of brown brick with rubbed red brick dressings, topped with a tile roof. The building features a moulded and dentilled brick cornice below the parapet and has six windows with segmental heads, glazing bars, and brick aprons. The southernmost window on the ground floor has a keystone inscribed with the date and initials "1727 1 H". The entrance is highlighted by a doorcase with fluted Corinthian pilasters, an entablature, and a dentilled wood cornice, leading to a fielded panelled door with a glazed top panel. The roof is not visible. Inside, there is a very good original staircase and several rooms retain good original panelling and doors. The east wing, dating from around 1700, has been much altered. This building is part of a group with Nos 30, 31, 33 to 40.
