Description
No. 38 Newmarket Road is a house, now used as offices, built around 1795 by William Wilkins (senior, who died in 1815). The structure is made of gault brick laid in Flemish bond and features a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall and has a three-window range. The entrance includes a five-panelled door set to the right, which is topped by an overlight. To the left of the door are six-over-six unhorned sash windows. On the first floor, there are three two-light French windows protected by cast-iron balconies, while the second floor has three three-over-three unhorned sash windows. All window and door openings are topped with gauged skewback arches. The building has a corbelled eaves cornice and a hipped roof with a bank of chimney flues on the east wall. Inside, there is a stick-baluster staircase with a ramped handrail and turned newels. The first floor features a late 19th-century arched register grate.
