Description
The Lathe House at Crescent Waggon Repair Shop is a lathe house built around 1880 for the Midland Railway. It is a timber-framed building clad with vertical boarding and features a Welsh slate roof. The structure is small and rectangular with a gabled roof. One long wall has a continuous window consisting of four cross-framed lights separated by timber mullions. The gutters are supported by shaped timber brackets, and the low pitch roof has a raised ventilator at the center of the ridge. The rear long wall has large boarded doors in the center, while the gable ends are blind with plain bargeboards. The interior has not been seen. This building was constructed as the lathe house for the adjacent waggon works of the Midland Railway and is notable for being the only Victorian waggon works building still in use for its original purpose. It is included for its group value with the well-preserved Victorian railway waggon works.
