Description

TL 1442 SOUTHILL SOUTHILL PARK

13/228 North Terrace, approx 50 31.10.66 metres N of house

GV I

Terrace. 1795-1800 for Samuel Whitbread II by Henry Holland, as part of the remodelling of Southill Park. Ashlar, probably Portland stone. Approximately 150 metres long, returning southwards at each end. Balustrading approximately half metre high, gates about 2 metres high. The 'balustrading' is in the form of round-headed arcading, with wrought iron diamond shape within each arch. Terrace has urns on plinths at intervals, the returns terminating in plinths supporting lead reclining female figures, these latter added after 1812 by Whitbread, when he purchased a number of statues by Sir Henry Cheere. The gateway, in line with the central block of the house, bears the Byng arms, and was rediscovered and erected here 1900. These ornate gates and screen are of wrought iron, with scroll-work and foliate cresting above the gates. The gateway is approached from the N by a flight of stone steps flanked by low ashlar wall with urns to corner piers. (C Hussey, "Southill Park", Country Life, 12th July 1930, p.48.)
