Description

North Terrace is a terrace built between 1795 and 1800 for Samuel Whitbread II by Henry Holland, as part of the remodelling of Southill Park. It is constructed of ashlar, probably Portland stone, and is approximately 150 metres long, returning southwards at each end. The terrace features balustrading that is about half a metre high, with gates that stand about 2 metres high. The balustrading consists of round-headed arcading, with wrought iron diamond shapes within each arch. At intervals along the terrace, there are urns on plinths, and the returns terminate in plinths that support lead reclining female figures, which were added after 1812 by Whitbread when he acquired several statues by Sir Henry Cheere. The gateway, aligned with the central block of the house, displays the Byng arms and was rediscovered and erected in 1900. The ornate gates and screen are made of wrought iron, featuring scroll-work and foliate cresting above the gates. Access to the gateway from the north is provided by a flight of stone steps flanked by a low ashlar wall with urns on the corner piers.
