Description

The Cock Public House is a mid-19th century ale house and cottages located on High Street in Southill. The building is constructed of yellow brick and features a slate roof with five brick chimneystacks. The right-hand section is two storeys high, with a 12-light sash window on the first floor and a canted bay window with 24 panes on the ground floor. There is a cambered entrance on the left with a half-glazed door.

Adjoining this is a long L-shaped range of two storeys, which includes a 6-pane sash window on the first floor and a 20th-century tripartite window on the ground floor. The side elevation displays irregularly placed casement windows and cambered doorcases.

Inside, The Cock Public House boasts an unusually complete 19th-century pub interior featuring pine fittings. This includes a dado panelled skittles room with an original leather and wood skittles set designed in the form of a chair, a front parlour that is panelled with built-in settles and cupboards, and a rear parlour with a wooden mantelpiece, a cambered wooden cupboard, panelling, and built-in settles. The panelled corridor has wooden doors and tiled floors throughout, making it a rare example of a complete rural pub interior from this period.
