Description
The Fordham Almshouses are a pair of almshouses built in 1914 by Rupert O Fordham of Broom Hall in memory of his second wife. They were likely designed by Fordham himself, who was an amateur architect. The buildings are constructed of random rubble and feature a machine tile roof, with a total of six rooms spread over two storeys. A notable aspect of the facade is the wave-shaped eaves line.
The front has a six-window arrangement that follows an A, BB, AA, B rhythm, where A represents small, round-headed windows and B refers to semi-circular windows. All windows are casements, made with wood mullions and transoms, and have leaded lights. There is a single porch on the left-hand side that wraps around the corner and a double porch to the right of the centre. Both porches are open and have hipped roofs that echo the wave-shaped eaves of the main roof. The doorways have semi-circular heads that frame plank doors with side-lights.
There is an off-centre ridge stack and an integral stack on the right-hand gable, both made of rubble. A large stone plaque is situated between the porches, which reads: "In memory of Janet D Fordham, whose wish was to do good to others. Go thou and do likewise. 1913."
