Description

This group of five altars, located approximately 50 meters south of Ladies Lake, is designated as a Grade II* structure. The altars are made from white marble. Four of the altars are arranged around the edge of a circular lawn surrounded by trees, while the fifth altar is positioned in the center. Each altar is cylindrical, about 1 meter tall, featuring thin projecting cornices and simple marble caps at the top. They rest on square stone bases and are each intricately carved with four buchranea (ox heads), adorned with festoons of flowers hanging between them. The central altar displays a Greek inscription that reads: "HAIL DIOGENES SON OF ENON, HONEST CITIZEN OF ASKALON." Askalon is located near Gaza.
