Description

The Monument to Capability Brown, located to the west of the Broad Water, is a Grade II listed structure made primarily of Ketton stone. This monument takes the form of a Doric column, standing approximately 6 metres tall, which is interrupted by two rusticated blocks. At the top, it features a stone finial decorated with acanthus leaves. The column rests on a rectangular plinth that has a moulded base and cap, complete with large torus moulding. On the south side of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: 'These gardens originally laid out by Henry Duke of Kent, were altered by Philip Earl of Hardwicke and Jemima Marchioness Grey, with the professional assistance of Lancelot Brown Esq. in the years 1758, 1759, 1760.'
