Description
The Log Hut is a garden house built around 1838 for John, the 6th Duke of Bedford. This North American style log cabin is situated in a glade of evergreen trees. It features a coursed ironstone plinth, with the upper part of the logs retaining their bark and apparently encasing a brick structure. The roof is covered with fishscale shingles and has logs along the ridges, with deep verges on the gables that showcase logwork on the undersides. The building has an irregular cross-shaped plan and is single-storeyed.
The southwest gable includes part-glazed double doors decorated with twigwork, accessible by a flight of timber steps with a moulded timber balustrade. The northern angle features a twigwork door reached by a flight of stone steps. Other elevations have casement windows with plank shutters. A substantial ironstone ridge stack is present, featuring three linked moulded square shafts.
