Description

South Lodge and the adjoining screen at the Silsoe Entrance to Wrest Park is a 19th-century building constructed from rendered brick and topped with a slated mansard roof. It features a small square plan with one storey and attics above a basement, designed alongside the North Lodge to mark the main entrance to Wrest Park. A modern flat-roofed addition, which is not of special interest, extends from the south elevation.

The exterior of the lodge showcases rusticated quoins, a moulded eaves cornice, and a low rendered brick chimney located at the center of the roof. The east elevation has a slightly projecting central bay, while both the west and east elevations feature a central casement window with glazing bars, a wrought iron balconette, and a decorative keystone above the segmental-headed opening. The south elevation includes a pair of part-glazed double doors, adorned with a coat of arms on the keystone of the arched opening. Each elevation of the attic storey has a segmental-headed dormer window, with the south elevation featuring one topped with a triangular pediment. The modern single bay extension on the south elevation is rendered and includes a set-back doorway with glazed double doors, accompanied by a multi-pane two-light casement window to the left.

Inside, the lodge has been modified to connect with the 20th-century extension, but it still retains some features of the original layout, including panelled doors, an original hearth, and a vaulted passage cellar in the basement with an arched recess.

Attached to the north-west corner of the lodge is a wrought iron screen, approximately five metres long and two metres high. This screen rests on a low T-shaped plinth and, while plain in appearance, it terminates at a square openwork pier featuring decorative panels and a finial.
